At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
