Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
