EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
