The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas commercial made using AI following encountering widespread online backlash.

The short ad was developed via AI-generated video and was initially uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Audience Response and Removal

Following its publication, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the film. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "poorly edited".

"This moment is an key lesson as we investigate the effective application of generative technology," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was created for the brand by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed various situations that might go awry during the Christmas break, under the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Adverts that feature generative AI have become a growing phenomenon among large brands, notably for the holiday period.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As segments made with current AI video tools are prone to distort the longer they run, most such clips tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also raised fears about the replacement of human roles in the production industry, with some observers noting it might negatively impact work for camera crews.

Defense from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

According to her, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-created holiday spot from Coca-Cola according to analysis garnered a significant "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, several companies have also received scrutiny for employing AI in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The incident illustrates the evolving conversation within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
