The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and this week a study projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a mighty king appearing; rather, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a form of profound affection focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts in US history.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or reject?
The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the best about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to what makes it unique and magnificent, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most negative about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it means both modesty and conviction, a blend that committed national faithful ought to accept.
