This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
